During the opening session of the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party on the morning of January 26, 2021, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong articulated a perspective on the current state of Vietnam, which was subsequently endorsed by the Congress and integrated into the official Resolution. He stated, “With all humility, we can affirm that our nation has never possessed such a foundation, potential, position, and international prestige as it does today.”

To attain the present peace and status, Vietnam endured decades engulfed in the flames of war, including two devastating conflicts against the French and the United States. During these wars, the S-shaped country was ravaged by bombs, millions of Vietnamese were exposed to Agent Orange/dioxin and became its victims, and tens of thousands were also imprisoned in colonial jails.

Although nearly five decades have passed since the conclusion of the war, its effects continue to impact individuals on both sides. The Vietnamese Party, State, and people have collaborated with various nations and international organizations, including the U.S. government and its citizens, to address the aftermath of the conflict.
